Supplies: Exacto knife, rubbing alcohol (isopropyl), paper towels or a good lint-free cloth, and two 9005 light bulbs.

OE 9006 socket attached to the car. See those two small ridges in the center? We'll be cutting them out.

Bad pic, but you can kinda see the tab inside the 9005 bulb base that is the reason we need to cut those ridges off.

Ridges removed. Nothing to it.

Another shot. Be sure to use the alcohol and cloth to thoroughly clean the glass part of the new bulb before installing it, even if you're sure you never touched the bulb. Someone at the factory might have, and the oils from people's fingers will cause the bulb to blow out (sometimes literally, which makes a mess inside your headlight) much sooner than it normally would have.
It really is that easy. This one-time mod will allow you to install either a 9006 OR a 9005 bulb into your low beam socket. I don't recommend putting a 9006 in one side and a 9005 in the other since one will end up being brighter than the other, and will look goofy. No need to modify your wiring, no danger of melted wiring/harness/etc, since the 9005 only draws 10 more watts than the stock 9006 (9006 = 55W, 9005 = 65W). If you'll notice, the wiring going to your high beam bulbs is the same gauge (thickness) as the wiring going to your low beams. More proof that it's OK.

I have had this mod done for almost a year now, and have not once been flashed by people who thought I had my brights on. Light output increased noticeably (as it should, since the bulbs really do draw more current and thus have higher output, not to mention the fact that the 9005 doesn't have the tip painted), as did the quality of the light. This is what I'd call a free mod, since the only parts you need are the light bulbs, which are pretty cheap. I got a 2-pack of Sylvania Cool Blue 9005s for $16 at Wal-Mart. Can't beat that...
