It has been suggested by many folks on CamryMan's forum that
a chat room would be a great idea. So I made one. And here it is!
There are two ways to get into my chat room. Here's how to pick the
right one for you:
If words and abbreviations like IRC, Ping, CTCP, mIRC, Latency, and
ICMP make you want to run for the hills, then please use Method 1. But if
words like that make you feel at home, then you should probably use Method 2.
Method 1
Click here to enter the chat room - a new browser window
will open. You don't need any special software other than the internet browser
you're using right now, but your browser must support Java (Internet Explorer or Netscape
version 3 or higher both support Java). It will take a few moments to load up the chat window, after which you will
eventually see the channel welcome message, and if other people are present,
you'll likely also see their on-going
conversation. To make things easier, you'll need to change your nickname so we know who
we're talking to. When you first log on, it will give you a nickname like
Guest12345, which obviously isn't very descriptive. It's real easy to change your
nickname though. Just type /nick Your_nickname and replace the
Your_nickname with one of your choice. No spaces are allowed, but
you can use the underscore, like this: John_Doe. Keep it simple please, and
please try to use the same nick every time you chat. If you need help with anything,
ask anyone with an @ or a + next to their nickname on the list at the right, they will
do their best to help you.
Method 2
If you're technically savvy, and prefer using
mIRC, BitchX, IRSSI,
or any other standard IRC client to connect to IRC chat rooms, rejoice! You can
use them here too! Just start your IRC client, and connect to
irc.mircx.com by typing /server irc.mircx.com in your client. The system
may automatically assign you a nickname, such as 'Guest18743' but you can change this
with the standard /nick NICKNAME command. This network supports nicks
up to 30 characters in length, but they may not contain spaces, commas, periods, or any
other of the normally dis-allowed symbols. Underscores are acceptable - ie:
John_Doe. Now that you're on, and have a nickname, you need to join the channel!
Just type /join #gibson99.cjb.net and you'll be in, and can now chat with anyone
else who may be present. This server makes use of ChanServ and NickServ services,
so if you're familiar with these (also used on DalNet), then you can register your
nickname so that there's no chance of someone logging on and impersonating you.
For more info on Nickserv, just type /nickserv help in your chat window, and
NickServ will send you private notices with information.
Please note that no matter which method you use, you are expected to behave yourself. If you choose/use an offensive nickname, or are repeatedly offensive to other users or are abusing your priveleges, you may be forcibly removed (kicked) and/or BANNED from the chat room, at the sole discretion of the channel operators (anyone with an @ next to their name), with or without warning. If your behavior is exceptionally bad, you may be removed/banned (K-Lined or even G-Lined, depending on the severity of your offense(s)) from the entire IRC network by the IRC operators. This is beyond the control of Jason/Annon/Gibson99 or any other channel operators, so don't pester them to find out why you were K-Lined. Chances are you ought to know why anyway, since it takes a pretty serious offense for an IRCop to get involved.
Disclaimer: IRC is a global, unmoderated medium, and
as such, you may sometimes encounter offensive or objectional material, including,
but not limited to profanity, vulgarities, racial slander, pornography, or other
material. Since IRC is a global medium, there is really not much we can do about this
except to warn you that it may occur. Since IRC is International, it's quite possible that
other participants may not always speak English. Please do not harass others simply because
they aren't speaking the same language as you. Also, please keep in mind that messages sent
in this chat room are in no way private. There will always be hackers, so do not
transmit any sensitive information or data on the internet.
By entering the chat room, you are agreeing to
indemnify and hold harmless Jason Gibson (Gibson99), and all other individuals or parties, for anything
that you may experience while connected to the IRC network or viewing on this or other
web sites. If you don't want to take a chance, then don't use your computer.
Basically, this is the standard disclaimer that this age of
lawsuit abuse requires me to put on my site, saying that you can't sue me for any
reason at all, whether you like it or not.
